For many, living a healthy lifestyle means being more aware of the ingredients in foods and beverages. This has led to a push for more, clean label products. Consumers today are increasingly conscious of what they are putting into their bodies.

The popularity of the clean label initiative is spreading rapidly. While the Food and Drug Administration has not yet defined the term, “clean label” refers to foods with fewer or no additives, minimal processing and easily recognizable ingredient lists.

Three-fourths of consumers in the United Stated claim to read nutrition facts and ingredient labels, according to Innova, a report cited by Food Business News. Many consumers also believe a food label should be easy to comprehend and easy to recognize.

Many popular brands have taken consumer concerns to heart, and have either changed the ingredients to existing products or added new lines of products with a clean label.

Monin, a brand of food and beverage ingredients, is one brand that takes pride in its clean label products.

Vittorio Caputi, a business development manager at Monin, said while not all flavors can be changed to become clean label products, many if not most of the brand’s products are considered clean label. He cited cotton candy as one flavor that could not be replicated using natural ingredients.

With clean label products, customers are assured that the ingredients in the food or beverage they are eating comes from a natural source.

Clean label products do not imply that such products are considered healthy or low in calories; it simply means the resources used to make the product are considered natural. This term is also not to be confused with certified organic products.

Still, the clean label initiative has made consumers feel better about their eating habits by allowing them to avoid highly processed foods and drinks. Many consumers are even more willing to pay a higher price for foods with a clean label.

According to Nielsen’s 2015 Global Health and Wellness Report, all age demographics from Generation Z to Baby Boomers are willing to pay more money for foods that are all natural, GMO-free and have no artificial coloring or flavors.
